Running news

You know you’re a running nerd when your mug shows up on a newsletter for upcoming running and triathlon events.

Yep, that crazy one in the pink is me, at the 5k mark of last May’s YSJ 10K airport run. It’s a great event and is slated again for this year on May 3. You can run 5K, 10K, or the new “double dare” – running both 5 and 10 K races in the same evening.

The YSJ run is one of my local favourites. It’s fast and flat, and there’s a unique feeling to running on an airport runway. It’s also where I tackled my first 10K race in 2012. I totally recommend it. Registration is open.

Also new on the New Brunswick running circuit this year is the New Brunswick Challenge. Replacing the Tri-Cities Challenge (which I completed in 2013!), the idea is to participate in not three, but four New Brunswick running events to get a special medal.

The events include the Fredericton Marathon, the Rock n Run in Miramichi, Marathon by the Sea in Saint John and Legs for Literacy in Moncton. I think adding the Miramichi run is a great idea and a sure way to get more runners out to Miramichi – I’ve never been and it sounds like a great race!

A few other exciting events to add to your calendar:

The Lorneville Loop 13K on April 13, featuring a very cool medal and a hot meal at the finish.

A Run or Dye colour run on June 21 at Poley Mountain. I tried one last fall near Halifax and it was a blast!

Mudd, Sweat and Tears is coming to Saint John on Aug. 23. Described as “10kms+ of crawling, running, climbing and negotiating everything from 100-foot rope traverses and vertical walls, to tunnels and barb wire draped mud crawls.”

Wow… just a few things for runners to look forward to this season. It’s gonna be a good one!

  1. That’s super cool that your picture ended up in the paper! I live in Nova Scotia, but funny enough I’ve run three marathons in NB and I did the 1/2 in Saint John this past August. NB has a lot of great races! Fredericton will be my favourite maritime marathon ever though. 🙂
